Sail Sixteen - Motoring on the Warrick River - September 2, 2001

Kerrie, David and I went to the Warrick River to sail. This is a pleasant place off of Fort Eustis. The river is peaceful and deep in the channel. At the dock you can put the dagger board down and the rudder down and sail off - rare in this area.
It had been a while since Kerrie had gone out with me and she was somewhat nervous. The wind was a little brisk and I decided that it would be simpler and more comfortable for Kerrie to just motor for the day. We motored about half throttle into the James River and proceeded north to visit the Naval Reserve Fleet known locally as the ghost fleet. Things were going well. However, there is a bend in the river and the river narrows at this point so the water is a little rougher and the power boats passed much closer. One of the yachts that went by threw up a pretty large wake, I steered to take the wake head on and I didn't think it was bad at all but when I glance over at Kerrie I realized that this wasn't a good thing. She was very uncomfortable with the pitching of the boat. I steered us out of the channel, took a quick pass by the carrier in the reserve fleet and headed us back toward the Warrick River. This time I tried to keep as close to sure as possible mainly because it so beautiful. We had a nice trip back and put the boat back on the trailer and headed home.
It was too bad that we didn't get to sail but it was still a very nice outing. Kerrie is being a very good sport about all of this since she is clearly not comfortable with the boat yet. I am trying to take things slow so she will come around but I think it is going to take awhile. On the entire trip, the depth sounder was acting up - we decided that we should go ahead and try something else. On Monday (Labor Day) I went out and got a Raytheon Fish Finder that I think will do a much better job for us.
