Seventh Sail - Our First Sail on the York River - March 11, 2001

Conditions were much worse than forecast. The forecast was for winds 5 to 10 knots. When we were on the water there was a very strong wind with white caps which are supposed to start forming at 15 knots. We started out with the motor and then put up the main sail with a single reef. This was a mistake as it was still too much sail and a lot of weather helm. Next time there are winds like this, I will try sailing just on the jib to see how well the helm will handle under that sail configuration. At any rate we were weren't comfortable with the conditions and called it a day. While unrigging the boat we did see a beautiful bald eagle in flight - it was gorgeous. We put the boat back on the trailer and drove over to West Point (which was our sailing destination) and made a nice afternoon of it. On the way back we took the colonial parkway from Williamsburg to Yorktown. I think the highlight of this trip for David was the slurpies we got in West Point. One other note, when Kerrie was telling the folks at work about our "harrowing adventure" the high point in her story was on the way back, when she was feeling a little "green" from the rough water, and David appears at the hatch wanting to know if anyone else wanted a sandwich.

Here is a picture that David took with his camera.
