Day sail up the Elizabeth River up to near ODU. It had been quite a while since I had done that.

Crane on a barge with a heavy lift. I heard on the radio it was headed for the HRBT where new construction is going on.

I motored on the way back and was treated to the rare sight of an Aircraft Carrier (CVN 78, the Gerald Ford) backing out of it's berth (with 3 tugs assisting), turning and then getting underway. There was a 500 yard security zone around the operation but I had a birds eye view. Pretty neat.

As I was entering Willoughby Harbor I saw a strange looking craft. At first I thought it had something to do with the HRBT construction. But as I got closer I realized it was a hovercraft. This one looked different from ones I've seen before but maybe it was just that I was some much closer and the ones I've seen before were already moving. Notice the aircraft carrier in the background crossing the HRBT.
